Friends of Lake Claremont - 08/09/2024

Last weekend the Friends of Lake Claremont (FOLC) held their busy bee, a monthly volunteer effort to help sustain the bushland around Lake Claremont through various conservation activities such as planting, weeding, and mulching.

The Friends of Lake Claremont was established in 2003. Their aim, to enhance the previous conservation efforts by Ian Lantzke, P.W. Gabriel, and Bruce Haynes in 1987, to restore and revegetate the lake. Prior to FOLC, the lake was used as a market garden, a rubbish tip, and a golf course which had caused extensive damage to the previous ecosystem.

This months busy bee saw one of the largest turnouts of volunteers ever seen by the FOLC coordinators. This resulted in the clearing of over 60 gardening bags worth of weeds. Manual weeding is necessary as herbicides cannot be sprayed in the areas in which the native seedlings are planted.

Since 2009, FOLC have planted over 350,000 seedlings of various native plants and have seen an increase in the number of volunteers of various backgrounds.
